My Heart Belongs To Old Man Winter

The cold winter paralyzed life in Smithville.

The heavy snow sealed the ground with a crystal wrap as if it were ready to stay in the frozen garden for a hundred years.

A flake of snow in flurry thro’ the air
Had landed as a kiss upon my cheek:
A secret message, just for me to share;
To take to heart but never dare to speak
About or presuppose to other eyes
Your open feelings – distant though they are.
And so, upon your lips, my OWN surprise:
A flake of snow returned from me afar.

Mark R Slaughter 2010

The cold earth slept below

The cold earth slept below;
Above the cold sky shone;
And all around,
With a chilling sound,
From caves of ice and fields of snow
The breath of night like death did flow

Beneath the sinking moon.
The wintry hedge was black;
The green grass was not seen;
The birds did rest
On the bare thorn’s breast,
Whose roots, beside the pathway track,
Had bound their folds o’er many a crack
Which the frost had made between.
Thine eyes glow’d in the glare
Of the moon’s dying light;
As a fen-fire’s beam,
On a sluggish stream
Gleams dimly—so the moon shone there,
And it yellow’d the strings of thy tangled hair,
That shook in the wind of night.

GOD BLESSED ME WITH A GREAT FAMILY. MRS.D.'S BIO.

Nothing is more beautiful than a smile on loved ones’ faces.

Biography
: I was born in West Ukraine in 1959. I grew up on a farm in a village nestled in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains. As a child, I was surrounded by nature and the real world, without TV and toys. I learned to read by the age of four, and books then became a huge part of my life.
In my country at this time, the post–World War II recovery was still in progress, and very often, as a child of the ’60s, I ran after the truck delivering bread. The ice cream truck did not exist in my part of the world.

To escape the harsh reality of everyday hard farm labor, I created my own imaginary world populated with characters from books. Once you enter the world of books, you can be everywhere and everyone; you just have to imagine it.

I learned very quickly that there was only one way out of the life I was born into: education. Everything else can be taken away from you, but education will stay with you forever. It is your investment for life. I studied hard, and at age of 16 I finished high school near the top of my class and entered business college.

I immigrated to the United States in 1992 with my two small daughters. Not knowing the English language and not having children’s books to read, I created my own stories. At bedtime, I told those stories to my children. Unfortunately, we did not write them down, and they disappeared from our memories.

I worked in my own bakery for many years in Smithville, New Jersey, and recently retired. I speak a few languages fluently, but was always terrified to write in English. However, I love to write, so last year I decided to learn how to write in English. I decided not to take any courses or go back to school. I did it fast, like a surgeon—painful but curing.

Everything happened at the same time: learning computer, typing, and writing in English. One morning, I opened my daughter’s old computer and with two fingers started to type my first children’s story. It was fun, mixed with frustration and fright.

“What language are you writing in, honey?” my husband asked one evening.
“English, I guess,” I answered proudly. He read the first sentence and smiled, and then he began to correct my written pages.
“Keep going, the story makes me laugh.” He encouraged me day after day. Sweating over every sentence, many days later, I finally got somewhere. I was able to send my first email to my daughters, and for the first time, they did not call me to ask what I meant. They understood every word I wrote.

It was a struggle at first, but I found that learning to write in English was very rewarding, almost therapeutic. It consumed all my bad energy and made me reconnect with my soul and my family.

We worked as a team, with me writing and my family making corrections. They were the worst critics I had ever faced. With the help of my husband and my daughters, I overcame my fears, and while practicing English wrote a few children’s stories. Those close to me encouraged me to publish some of them, and now you can be the judge.

NO DESCRIPTIONS NEEDED... MRS.D. IS WORKING HARD!

 I HAD GOOD INTENTIONS TO FINISH ALL MY WORK THIS YEAR

Carlo the Mouse: Grab your boots and hold on to your hat, because you're in for an exciting trip! Let your imagination soar in this new full version of Carlo's adventures. This series of 10 books is an entertaining look into the life of this little mouse, who was born inside a hospital's walls. His parents taught him how to survive on his own, but Carlo broke all their rules in exploring the hospital.

Clever, curious, and very impatient, Carlo constantly gets in trouble with the hospital staff, causing chaos in the hospital. Somehow, he manages to survive the exterminator, the head cook, Fidel the cat, and the hospital manager, who becomes his worst nightmare.

As he learns about famous cooks from watching cooking shows on TV, Carlo dreams about the world outside the hospital. But as he takes an unexpected vacation far away from home, he finds out that the world outside the hospital is not what he expected. His insatiable desire for adventure gets him in constant trouble.

I am working ON MY BOOKS...IT 'S HARD.

Mommy’s Loving Stories, soon to be published:

That Is How Things Are. (two connected stories:The Autumn Wind - a powerful story about nature, and how quickly things can change, and The Kitten and the Sparrow - a  beautiful story about friendship between a kitten and a sparrow.)

The Mysterious Life Inside a Closet: A humorous story about the mysterious life inside a closet.

Who Is Most Important in the Fridge?:These fun rhyming stories introduce young readers to delightful food characters with goofy personalities, real feelings, passions and fears, who always disagree with each other about who will feed a hungry little girl first.

I had a thought: Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance...

How “Merlot” can she go?

The great evil of wine is that it first seizes the feet, it is a crafty wrestler.

With wine in hand, one reaches the happy state - where men are wise, women beautiful; and even one's children begin to look promising. Life starts making sense again...

Good thing I didn't get a tattoo...

 The discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constellation.
 The universe is too full of stars.Life is beautiful...and work can wait.

Men are like wine – some turn to vinegar, but the best improve with age.
So true...

Another well-known Paris landmark is the Eiffel Tower, a moving monument to the many brave women and men who have died trying to visit it. I survived...

Life is uncertain.  Eat dessert first.

Life is a combination of magic and food...:-) Enjoy it!

The worst thing about being a tourist is having other tourists recognize you as a tourist...Bad!

To my children:“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.”

Learning about wine and food, traveling and taking care of my "grown children", I still manage to finish my books, The City Kittens and the Old House Cat - a wonderful Christmas story about sharing and giving. Good Morning, World! - a happy story about Baby Thomas and his Grandpa, and Carlo the Mouse, Book 1: Too Many Rules for One Little Mouse - a funny story, full of the adventures and troubles of Carlo the mouse. The Royal Palm. A snobby silver palm learns a valuable lesson and the meaning of real friendship.

Runaway Clothes. An instructional story about a little girl who didn't like to take care of her clothes and toys. In the end, she learns how easy it is to lose something you love so much.
